Finding a Purpose

How we helped team members find purpose in a fragmented environment where trust had been lost.

THE CHALLENGE

A group of organisations working together in response to a global health emergency was at breaking point. They were fragmented and commitment was at an all-time low. Trust in each other had been diminished, and progress had lost momentum. As a result of this dysfunctional environment, the group had become divided into two camps; those that wanted to address these issues and those who didn’t even want to discuss them.

THE APPROACH

After conducting interviews and surveys with the team members, it became obvious that the different groups needed to have open and frank discussions. A fun and dynamic programme was designed that included face-to-face sessions, role-playing, games and a ‘Trust Laboratory’. The common goals of the organisations were renewed, self-awareness started to emerge and discouragement was replaced with optimism.

THE OUTCOME

After the coaching programme finished, team members displayed reconnection with peers and purpose. Importantly, they learnt that collaboration does sometimes involve conflict; it’s not an either/or situation, and that it is learning to deal with conflict in an empathetic way that is the key to growing effectively together. Workplace ambiance and communication become noticeably more congenial, which by default, created cohesion and productivity.
